Ali, Obanikoro, Marwa, Make Ambassadorial List

President Umaru Yar\'Adua has nominated the out-going National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Ahmadu Ali, for confirmation by the Senate as ambassador.
Also yesterday, Yar\' Adua forwarded three fresh ministerial nominees, namely, Mr. Demola Seriki from Lagos State, Orubebe Peter Godsday from the South-South zone and Udo Chuka Julius from the Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA) to the Senate for confirmation.
Meanwhile Taraba and Kaduna states are yet to have a representative in the Federal Executive Council.
Seriki�s nomination seems to have put paid to the lingering bickering in Lagos State PDP over the ministerial slot given to the state.
Ali made the list of 62 ambassadorial nominees, which was read on the floor of the Senate yesterday by Senate President, Senator David Mark.
Others who made the list, composed of 42 politicians and 20 career diplomats, included the defeated governorship candidate of PDP in Lagos State, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, former presidential aspirant, Brigadier- General Buba Mohammed Marwa, former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Professor Joy Ogwu, and former ECOMOG Commander, Major-General Timothy Shelpidi (rtd.)
The list also comprised the following political nominees: Chief Empire Kanu (Abia), Chief (Dr.) Etim U. Uye (Akwa Ibom) Hon. Jerry Ugokwe (Anambra), Dr. Aisha Laraba Abdulahi (Bauchi), Senator Felix Oboro (Bayelsa) Prof. Iyorwuese Hargher (Benue), Barrister Obed Wadzani (Borno), Chief Soni Abang (Cross River), Chief Godson Echegile (Delta) and Chief Polycarp Nwite (Ebonyi).

In the covering letter to the list, President Yar� Adua said the appointment of the nominees was in accordance with section 171(c) sub-section 4 of the 1999 constitution and expressed the hope that the Senate would approve their appointment expeditiously.
The Senate President appealed to his colleagues to warn the nominees not to attempt to reach any of them (senators) for the purpose of bribing them to confirm their (nominees�) appointment.
He said that the upper chamber would be fair to all nominees just like it did with the first set of ministerial nominees it screened recently.
According to him, �I must warn that you should tell your nominees that there is no need to see anybody through the back door by carrying �Ghana Must Go� bag.  We did well with the previous ministerial nominees and we intend to do well with this.�
He said that the new ministerial nominees would be screened live like their counterparts via network broadcasting while the ambassadorial nominees would not get the same opportunity due to paucity of funds.
He, however, said that when the ambassadorial nominees would be screened by the Foreign Affairs Committee headed by Senator Jubril Aminu, the exercise would be recorded and air time would be bought to show it on Television for Nigerians to watch.

Ali, Obanikoro, Marwa, 59 others on ambassadorial list

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Dr. Ahmadu Ali, a former Minister of Defence, Alhaji Rabiu Kwankwaso, and an ex-military administrator of Lagos State, Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa, are among 42 non-career diplomats whose names have been forwarded to the Senate by President Umaru Yar’Adua for confirmation as ambassadors. Also on the list, which was read out by the President of the Senate, Senator David Mark, to the senators on Tuesday, are names of 20 career diplomats. The non-career ambassadorial nominees are Alhaji Abdullahi Aminchi, who was Yar’Adua’s deputy as Katsina State governor; a former PDP governorship candidate in Lagos State, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro; and a former Minister of Aviation, Dr. Kema Chikwe. The immediate past Senate Leader, Senator Dalhatu Tafida; an ex-Minister of State for Power and Steel, Alhaji Ahmed Madori; an ex-ECOMOG Field Commander, Gen. Timothy Shelpidi; a former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Prof. Joy Ogwu; and an All Nigeria Peoples Party chieftain, Alhaji Abubakar Cika; are also on the list. Others are a former Chairman of the Abuja Municipal Council, Mrs. Esther Audu; an ex-member of the House of Representatives, Mr. Jerry Ugokwe; an industrialist, Chief Empire Kanu; Chief Etim U. Mark, after reading the names of the nominees, added that Yar’Adua wanted the Senate to also confirm three additional ministerial nominees. The ministerial nominees are Mr. Peter G. Orubebe, Mr. Peter Godsday from the South-South, Mr. Ademola R. Seriki of Lagos State, and Mr. Chuka J. Odom of the Progressive Peoples Alliance. Yar’Adua, in a letter dated September 20, 2007 and addressed to Mark, urged the Senate to speedily confirm the nominees. The letter reads, “Confirmation of Ambassadorial Nominees: In accordance with Section 171 (C) sub-section 4 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I have the honour to forward to you, the attached list of 42 non-career and 20 career Foreign Service Officer Ambassadorial nominees for consideration for Senate confirmation. “Copies of their curriculum vitae are attached herewith. It is my hope that this receives the usual kind, expeditious attention of the distinguished members of the Senate of the Federal Republic.” Shortly after reading out the names, Mark advised the senators to warn nominees from their constituencies against any form of inducement. He said, ”Tell your nominees that there is no need for them to see anybody with any ‘Ghana Must Go’ bags behind the scene. Tell them that only those found fit and proper will be cleared.” The President of the Senate added that the screening of the ambassadorial nominees would be recorded and aired later. But that of the ministerial nominees would be aired live on television. Ali was a Federal Commissioner for Education when former President Olusegun Obasanjo was a military Head of State. A former senator, he assumed the leadership of the PDP in 2005 under controversial circumstances. Shelpidi is currently the Chairman and Pro-Chancellor of the Gombe State University. He was among the 11 Generals retired in June 1999 by Obasanjo. Kwankwaso was the governor of Kano State from 1999 to 2003. He lost the 2003 election to the current Governor, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau. He was later appointed Minister of Defence by Obasanjo. Chikwe, who hails from Imo State, is a top member of the PDP while Marwa was a former deputy defence adviser, Nigerian Embassy, Washington DC, United States. Tafida, a medical doctor, was Minister of Health between 1993 and 1995. Ogwu was a former Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs. Obasanjo had in 2004 appointed 60 non-career and career diplomats as ambassadors. Prominent among them were a former Minister of Education, Prof. Tunde Adeniran; a former Ambassador to Israel, Prof. George Obiozor; and the son of a former Head of State, Mr. Thomas Aguiyi-Ironsi.

Yar\'Adua names Ali, Marwa, 60 others as envoy-nominees

OUT-GOING Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national chairman, Ahmadu Ali and former Military Administrator of Lagos State, Brig.-Gen. Mohammed Buba Marwa, were on the list of 62 names sent to the Senate by President Umaru Musa Yar\'Adua for confirmation as ambassadors.

The Senate also got another list containing the names of three persons nominated for confirmation as ministers. They are Mr. Orubebe Peter Godsday representing the South-South geo-political zone; Seriki Ademola Razak ( Lagos State) and Odom Chuka Julius, representing the Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA).

The 62-man ambassadorial list comprising 42 political nominees and 20 career officers also include the former PDP gubernatorial candidate in Lagos State, Senator Musiliu Olatunde Obanikoro, a former Commander of the ECOMOG, Gen. Timothy Shelpidi and former Foreign Affairs Minister, Prof. Joy Ogwu.

The immediate past Senate Majority leader, Dalhatu Tafida, the former Minister of Aviation, Dr. Kema Chikwe and former Kano State Governor Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso were also among the ambassadorial nominees.

The Senate President, David Mark, who read out the list to senators yesterday immediately warned the nominees against the tendency to offer inducements to any senator and charged senators close to any of the nominees to advise them against such moves.

His words: "I must warn that you should tell your nominees that there is no need to see anybody, going through the back door by carrying Ghana Must Go bag.

"We did well with the previous ministerial nominees and we intend to do well with this."

But the list would be referred to the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs for screening before reporting to the Senate.

Ali, Marwa, Chikwe, Obanikoro top list

Ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national chairman Col. Ahmadu Ali (rtd), ex-administrator of Lagos State, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (rtd) and several other loyalists of former President Olusegun Obasanjo topped the list of 62 ambassadorial nominees presented to the Senate yesterday for confirmation by President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.

Similarly, former senatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State, Seriki Rasaq yesterday made the list of three additional ministerial nominees presented to the Senate by the president for confirmation.

Rasaq’s nomination may have ended the long speculation on who replaces a former nominee of the state, Bode Augusto who was unanimously rejected by the Senate.

Also on the ministerial list which was read on the floor of the Senate yesterday by its Senate President David Mark are Orubede Godsday (South South) and Odom Chuka Julius of the Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA).

Among others on the ambassadorial list are former PDP governorship candidate Sen. Musiliu Obanikoro (Lagos) former governor of Kano state Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, former Senate leader Dalhatu Tafida (Kaduna), former minister of transport Mrs. Kema Chikwe (Imo) and immediate past minister of Foreign Affairs, Prof. Joy Ogwu.

At least 42 out of the 62 nominees are non-careerists (politicians); 20 are core foreign service officers and civil servants.

Chieftains of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) Hon. Fidel Ayogu, (Enugu) and Alhaji Abubakar Cika (Sokoto) also made the list of non career ambassadorial nominees now with the Senate.

The inclusion of the ANPP chieftain is said to be in keeping with the National Unity (GNU) project of President Yar’Adua.

Also on the list are former member of the House of Representatives Dr. Jerry Ugokwe (Anambra), and former chairman of Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) (Mrs) Esther Audu (FCT).

Others are Sen. Abdullahi Wali (Sokoto), Chief Empire Kanu (Abia), Etim Uye (Akwa Ibom), Aisha Abdullahi (Bauchi), Sen. Felix Oboro (Bayelsa), Prof. Iyorwuese Hargher (Benue ), Obed Wadzani, Soni Abang (Cross River), Godson Echegue (Delta), Sen. Polycarp Nwite (Ebonyi), Prince Eheneden Erediauwa (Edo), and Gen. Timothy Shelpidi (Gombe).

Meanwhile Senate president Mark has warned that Senate would not hesitate to withhold confirmation of any of the nominees who attempted to bribe any senator in order to influence his or her confirmation by the Upper House.

Sen. Mark, in his quick remark after reading the names of the nominees, also urged senators not to accept any form of gratification from any of the ambassadorial nominees, insisting that Senate would be transparent and fair to all the nominees due for confirmation next week.
