VANGUARD Ali, Obanikoro, Marwa, Make Ambassadorial List

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Dr. Ahmadu Ali, a former Minister of Defence, Alhaji Rabiu Kwankwaso, and an ex-military administrator of Also on the list, which was read out by the President of the Senate, Senator David Mark, to the senators on Tuesday, are names of 20 career diplomats. Uye, Dr. Aisha L. Abdullahi; Chief Felix Oboro; a former minister of state for Science and Technology, Prof. Iyorwuse Hargher; and Mr. Obed Wadzani. Others are Chief Soni Abang; Chief Godson Echegile; Senator Polycarp Nwite; Mr. Eheneden Erediauwa, a former ambassador to Norway; Mr. Toye Olofintuyi; Mr. Godwin Agbo, Alhaji Isah Mohammed, Brig.-Gen. Yusuf Abubakar, and Dr. Nimota Akanbi. OUT-GOING Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national chairman, Ahmadu Ali and former Military Administrator of Lagos State, Brig.-Gen. Mohammed Buba Marwa, were on the list of 62 names sent to the Senate by President Umaru Musa Yar\'Adua for confirmation as ambassadors.

The Senate President, David Mark, who read out the list to senators yesterday immediately warned the nominees against the tendency to offer inducements to any senator and charged senators close to any of the nominees to advise them against such moves.
His words: "I must warn that you should tell your nominees that there is no need to see anybody, going through the back door by carrying Ghana Must Go bag.
"We did well with the previous ministerial nominees and we intend to do well with this."
But the list would be referred to the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs for screening before reporting to the Senate.

Also on the ministerial list which was read on the floor of the Senate yesterday by its Senate President David Mark are Orubede Godsday (South South) and Odom Chuka Julius of the Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA).
Among others on the ambassadorial list are former PDP governorship candidate Sen. Musiliu Obanikoro (Lagos) former governor of Kano state Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, former Senate leader Dalhatu Tafida (Kaduna), former minister of transport Mrs. Kema Chikwe (Imo) and immediate past minister of Foreign Affairs, Prof. Joy Ogwu.
At least 42 out of the 62 nominees are non-careerists (politicians); 20 are core foreign service officers and civil servants.

The inclusion of the ANPP chieftain is said to be in keeping with the National Unity (GNU) project of President Yar’Adua.

Meanwhile Senate president Mark has warned that Senate would not hesitate to withhold confirmation of any of the nominees who attempted to bribe any senator in order to influence his or her confirmation by the Upper House.
Sen. Mark, in his quick remark after reading the names of the nominees, also urged senators not to accept any form of gratification from any of the ambassadorial nominees, insisting that Senate would be transparent and fair to all the nominees due for confirmation next week.
