THE NATION

Delta’s daily non-stop flights to New York next year    28/9/2007

GOOD news for the regular travellers between Nigeria and the United States.

Delta Airlines (the only major US carrier to operate service to Africa – has announced it will launch daily nonstop flights between Lagos and New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport effective June 10, 2008 (subject to government approval). The new flights will be Delta’s second daily service between Nigeria and the United States and will complement the airline’s daily service between Lagos and Atlanta, which will be launched on December 4 this year. Passengers flying on Delta from Lagos to New York JFK will benefit from convenient nonstop service to the Big Apple, as well as connections to destinations throughout the United States and beyond.

This strengthens the airline’s position as the only major U.S carrier to operate flights between Nigeria and the United States, with daily nonstop service to two U.S destinations

Speaking about the new service, Jimmy Eichelgruen, Delta’s director of sales for Africa, the Middle East and India said: "We are delighted to announce a second daily service from Nigeria to the United States, before we have even launched our first. With a choice of daily services to the United States to our hubs in both New York JFK and Atlanta, Delta’s Nigerian customers will benefit not only from convenient nonstop service to the United States, but also to hundreds of onward destinations that Delta serves throughout the U.S., Caribbean and Latin America. We have already seen a high demand for nonstop service between Lagos and Atlanta from both Nigerian and American customers and the new service to New York JFK will further strengthen commercial ties between the two nations. For freight forwarders and cargo shippers, a second daily service from Nigeria will expedite shipments of cargo to destinations throughout the United States."

Delta’s new service between Lagos and New York JFK is one of several new routes between Africa and New York planned for 2008 including Nairobi* (via Dakar), Cape Town. In December 2006, Delta launched nonstop service between Accra and New York JFK, as well as service between Johannesburg and Atlanta (via Dakar). By summer 2008, Delta will operate service to the United States from seven African destinations in six countries.

Delta will operate the new flights between Lagos and Atlanta with Boeing 767-300ER aircraft with up to 214 seats in a two-class configuration featuring BusinessElite, Delta’s award-winning business class service.

Flights between Lagos and New York JFK will be scheduled to depart Lagos at 12.50pm daily and arrive New York JFK at 6.35pm, effective June 10, 2008. The flight from New York JFK departs 6.40pm and arrives 11.05am, the following day.

Delta Air Lines operates service to more destinations than any global airline with Delta and Delta Connection flights to 315 destinations in 54 countries. Since 2005, Delta has added more international capacity than all other major U.S. airlines combined and is a leader across the Atlantic with flights to 36 trans-Atlantic markets. To Latin America and the Caribbean, Delta offers nearly 400 weekly flights to 54 destinations. Delta’s marketing alliances also allow customers to earn and redeem SkyMiles on nearly 15,000 flights offered by SkyTeam and other partners. Delta is a founding member of SkyTeam, a global airline alliance that provides customers with extensive worldwide destinations, flights and services. Including its SkyTeam and worldwide codeshare partners, Delta offers flights to 477 worldwide destinations in 103 countries.
