Kunle Awosiyan, Lagos - 09.11.2007

The Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) on Thursday announced the abolition of Integrated Science and Introductory Technology in Nigerian schools.

The Director of curriculum for NERDC, Abuja, Dr. Ola Adeniyi, disclosed this at the public presentation of the nine-year Universal Basic Education Curriculum in Lagos State.

Adeniyi said that the two subjects would no longer be taught in schools anymore, adding that they had been replaced with Basic Science and Technology.

The new curriculum, according to Adeniyi, had also brought back Civic Education as one of the compulsory subjects while Agricultural Science had now become an elective subject.

He stated that the curriculum had been structured into three levels with primaries 1-3 as the lower basic education, primaries 4-6 as middle basic level and the Junior Secondary School 1-3 as upper basic level.

According to him, the lower basic education consisted of 10 compulsory subjects with Civic, Computer Studies and Basic Science and Technology being the new subjects while Agriculture, Home Economics and Arabic Language remained as elective subjects.

He said “the middle basic education also consists of 11 subjects with French Language as one of the compulsory subjects while Agriculture, Home Economics and Arabic Language remain as elective subjects.
